BY ALEX ROSSBERG April 4, 2018 11:55:04The big four auto companies — General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and Fiat Chrysler — have long been seen as a major players in the U of A’s auto industry.
But in recent years, as the U has shed manufacturing jobs, it’s become more apparent that the auto industry is more reliant on technology than ever.
That shift has caused some automakers to look for new ways to bring back jobs, and some of them are trying to do so in a way that is far less expensive.
Ford, for example, is looking at a $20,000 grant from the UofA to build a manufacturing facility that would employ 250 people, up from 200 employees.
Fiat Chrysler recently announced that it’s investing $50 million in a research and development center for electric vehicles, which it says will allow the company to bring manufacturing back to Michigan.
And Chrysler has been working on a plan to build 1,500 new jobs in Michigan by 2025.
The company said it would invest $100 million in the area over the next five years, but it’s not clear if that’s the money that’s going to be spent on this project.
While these kinds of projects are certainly possible, it seems more likely that the investments will be smaller and more focused.
The question that many automakers have been asking themselves is, how can we bring back the manufacturing jobs that are being lost to automation?
And the answer to that is more research and innovation.
Automakers have been looking at ways to do that, including using research and technology that could help them build more electric vehicles.
That could allow them to sell more electric cars or be more selective in where they invest their investment.
“In the next 20 years, we’re going to see more and more of the automotive industry be powered by this new technology,” said Brian Tumlin, an associate professor of industrial engineering at the University of Michigan and a research scientist at the Ford Center for Automotive Research.
Ford is investing $5 million in research to build more autonomous vehicles.
Chrysler has committed to investing $20 million in its self-driving research center.
And Fiat Chrysler has set aside $50 billion to invest in research.
“We are looking at all of our research and all of the investment that we can make to bring new products to market and to help get those new products in people’s hands,” said Doug Oberhelman, Ford’s director of research and manufacturing.
But there’s also a big question mark surrounding the auto manufacturers’ plans.
What’s the deal with robots?
While robots may be part of the solution, it could also have a big impact on the manufacturing industry.
Robots, like the kind of robots we see in our cars, are expensive.
So if they’re not replacing people or replacing jobs, how are they going to bring more jobs back?
And, of course, there’s the issue of robots moving from manufacturing to services and into homes.
There’s also the question of robots taking over jobs that were previously held by humans.
“The question of how you’re going from manufacturing jobs to services jobs, I think is a question that is going to have to be addressed by the auto companies,” said Tumlyn.
“And the question is, is it going to come from people coming to the auto factories, or is it coming from people going into other parts of the economy?”
“The bottom line is we’ve got a tremendous number of people that have been out of work, that are living paycheck to paycheck,” said Oberhelmeer.
“And that’s a very difficult thing for any company to do.”
And while many of these investments might help the automakers bring back manufacturing jobs at a much smaller scale, it doesn’t mean the jobs won’t be in other sectors.
“A lot of people have lost their jobs,” said Ford’s Tumlen.
“So what’s going on with auto manufacturing is going on across a number of sectors.
It’s going around the world.
We’ve got the automobile assembly lines in Europe, the automotive manufacturing facilities in the United States, and in the auto parts supply chain in the rest of the world.”
So, what can the auto industries do to help keep the auto manufacturing jobs?
Tumlin said he believes that the automakers are trying their best to create a new industry in which people are able to work on their own and are treated with respect.
“There are a lot of companies out there that want to create this new manufacturing and service sector and bring back those jobs,” he said.
“I think we’ve seen that we’re not going to do it, because we can’t get those jobs in our economy.
But if we could get them in our country, that’s where we would be.”
And Oberhelm says the auto makers should do their part to help their workers stay on the road.
“They should not just be putting up barriers to the mobility of people,”
